It seems that almost everyday I hear someone say, “If I were president for a month I would get this country back on the right track.” But, I rarely hear anything about their plan for doing so. I think most of us know that things in Washington are definitely on the wrong track and can not be sustained for much longer at it’s present rate. But, how many have taken the time to think about how or what they would change if given the opportunity? It is obivious, to me anyway, that the politicians in Washington can not or will not make the tough decisions necessary to get things moving again. And, I’m not to sure this new batch that we elected on Tuesday can or will do any better. As most of you I’m sure know, this is supposed to be a government “of, by and for The People” in this country. I submit to you that it is not now or has it been for some time. Maybe it’s time for that to change. I know that we do not have many avenues open to us to make change other than the ballot box, but in the rest of this post I’ll try to present to you a plan that I think would at the very least get the attention of the folks in Washington and also tell us which of the politicians do not care what we the people think.
As most of you I’m sure will agree there is two areas that need immediate attention to get us back on track and out of this recession/depression. They are spending and taxes as both are out of control. I think the problem in both areas can be laid at the feet of “career politicians” which by the way we should never have and were not intended to have.” Representation of the people” was intended to be a service to your country not a career. I have thoughts of a plan that if implemented would either start us on the path to making the necessary changes and failing that would tell us exactly which of these career politicians needs to find another job!
I think that if we were to form a citizen committee to recommend needed changes to several Representatives, I would suggest Michele Bachmann as one, and several Senators, I think Marco Rubio and Rand Paul would do well as they already have their attention. These politicians could then put the recommendations in the form of bills to be presented to both chambers of Congress. If they were to pass, the needed changes would take place, if they did not we would then know who the culprits are that are not holding true to their oath to “uphold the Constitution” and fairly represent the people.
The make-up of this citizen committee would be a cross section of the country as follows; three people supporting a family on $35,000 or less per year, three people supporting a family on $35-200,000 per year and three people supporting a family making more than $200,000 per year. To these I would add Mr. Neal Bortiz, who knows more about the fair tax than most. Then I would add Mr. Herman Cain, who talks to thousands of people on his talk show and has a good read on what the people are thinking, and there are others who would be just as good. And I would also add Mr. Mark Levin, who I think has a most excellent knowledge of our Constitution. Lastly I would add a respected “former” member of Congress to advise on how that august body functions, my pick would be the former senator from Pennsylvania, Mr. Rick Santorum. You may have other choices and if you do that means you are thinking. These are just mine.
Now, on to my suggestions for getting things back on track. The first thing would be to abolish the grossly “unfair” income tax and replace it with some form of “fair” tax. Possibly a national sales tax. Secondly, a twenty-five percent cut across the board in spending starting right at the top with the salaries of the career politicians. I do not think they need to get so handsomely compensated for the very poor service they have been rendering to “we the people”, their employers. This cut would not be nearly as hard to do as some of you might think. Two areas would go a long way toward cutting spending. They would be “pork-barrel spending” and “entitlements”. Take entitlements for example, nowhere in our Constitution does it say anyone of us is entitled to anything other than the freedoms contained in the Constitution, Bill of Rights and the other amendments to that precious document. Spending can happen if we can just find some people with the guts to stand up and do it.
Now I’m not naive enough to think any of this will really happen, but I am trying to get more people thinking about these things. After this past Tuesday I think we have their attention and we should take every advantage. Contact every one of you members of Congress on a regular basis. And try to do it by mail if possible because every piece of mail has to be logged in and it’s to easy to delete e-mails without them having ever been read. Hold their feet to the fire and remember Representative has to stand for re-election every two years and senators every six. They know that and now you do too.
Thanks for reading and please leave a comment, and have a great day, Gary.
